An inveterate traveler, Mukerji’s subjects are drawn from the world around her – the landscapes, people, and animals she encounters. Recent work has taken on a more activist role as she has engaged with themes like migration – both global, human migration as well as the migration of wildlife she witnessed on a trip through Africa a few years ago. The current exhibition continues in this activist direction, but also draws from the artist’s collaborations with singer/songwriter Terre Roche, who is composing and will be performing and recording songs inspired by paintings in the show. The featured work includes architectural views of locations in New York and Kolkata interpreted through Mukerji’s fluid, black lines, and enlivened with vivid color. The theme of migration and human suffering also continues to be explored, in some cases in stark black and white. The work is powerful and expressive and calls on the viewer to be aware of the world around us.
The show runs at Blue Mountain Gallery through March 21st.
